Just two days after assuming the leadership of the Florida state judiciary, Chief Justice Peggy Canady signed an administrative order creating the Florida Innocence Commission. The 23-member Commission, funded jointly by the Florida legislature and the Florida Bar Association, will investigate the 11 DNA exonerations that have happened in Florida, determine the causes behind the convictions, and “develop recommendations for reforms to reduce wrongful convictions.”

With this development, Florida joins the number of states, including Pennsylvania, which are taking pro-active steps to address the injustices surrounding wrongful convictions and how we can work to bring emerging best practices into the criminal justice system.
