UNIONTOWN, PA: On Monday June 27, 2016, all charges against Crystal Weimer were finally dismissed with prejudice. Crystal has been home since October, 2015, when her conviction was vacated after a court found the evidence against her was “junk science.” Before that day, she was wrongly imprisoned for 11 years for a murder she did not commit. In 2006, Ms. Weimer was convicted of participating in the murder of a Connellsville man. From the day after the murder, Crystal has consistently maintained her absolute innocence. Her 2008 conviction depended largely on evidence that Crystal left a “bite mark” on the victim’s arm. On October 1, 2015, a trial court ruled that testimony is unreliable “junk science,” and vacated Crystal’s conviction and sentence. She went home that day, after 11 years of wrongful incarceration.Crystal is the fifth exoneree represented by the Pennsylvania Innocence Project found innocent since the Project opened its doors in 2009. Thank you to our tremendous volunteer partners from Jones Day: Jeff Bresch and Katie Matscherz. Crystal walked out of the Fayette County Courthouse yesterday afternoon a free woman. From all of us here at the Pennsylvania Innocence Project we would like to extend a well-deserved Congratulations to Crystal!
